Plus ça change . . .? Cultural change and continuity in the wake of French and American second-wave feminism

On January 23, 2014, Benjamin Moodie, Visiting Assistant Professor in Sociology at Bates College, presented the findings of his recently completed comparative dissertation on mainstream gender culture in France and the U.S. from the 1950s to the present.

His work, using analysis of mass-circulation women’s magazines, explains feminism’s comparative success in the U.S. while tracing lasting contrasts in the cultural coding of sexuality, achievement, and personhood in both cultural settings.
