Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities
This position requires working on a book project entitled The Encyclopedia of Slavery and Freedom.
This encyclopedia will provide a comprehensive and accessible catalog on the subject of slavery in America. It identifies the most important and influential literary works, authors, abolitionists and historical figures, and also defines and explains various terminologies and subjects related to American slavery.
The primary markets for this encyclopedia will be high schools, colleges, and special libraries. High school and college students will also find this book especially useful for both research purposes and general knowledge.
Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
- Compiling and alphabetizing all entries
- Fact-checking information
- Reading and editing entries
- Creating an index for all entries

Requirements
REQUIRED:
EDUCATION: The Research/Editorial Assistant must be at least a junior at Bates
EXPERIENCE: The Research/Editorial Assistant must feel comfortable and be efficient at
typing, reading, writing, and organizing. He or she must have solid
communication skills as well.
DESIRED:
EDUCATION: Senior status at Bates
EXPERIENCE: English major, African American Studies focus
