Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

Student will work in the laboratory and possibly the field with samples for a research project examining historical and modern water quality in a number of area lakes.  The job will entail both uncharismatic things like dish washing and more charismatic things like seeing cool organisms under the microscope and working with scientific equipment.  There also will be opportunities to learn field and laboratory methods for collection and analysis of environmental samples.  Maintenance of careful notes, ease with Excel, and willingness to ask questions are essential.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Requirements


Attention to detail, patience, and willingness to ask questions are required characteristics. Experience and comfort with Excel as well as previous course work involving labs in chemistry, biology, or geology would be exceedingly helpful. Students who are work-study eligible and have an interest in science are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities


Student will work in a lab, primarily with an opportunity for some field work early in the fall. He or she will work with ion chromatograph, microscopes, ICP, computers, and field equipment.

For the lab work, the students must have the ability to stand or sit for several hours at a time (with breaks) while performing tasks like washing dishes, analyzing data, or using a microscope.
