Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities
Because of the scope and nature of the Harward Center, the Student Assistant needs to possess the ability to take a project from start to completion without specific input from other Harward Center staff and therefore must be a self-starter. He or she must also be task-oriented and reliable. It is likely that the pace of the Center will require the student to manage his/her own time. In addition, and as time permits, the Student Assistant will assist all Harward Center staff through general administrative support such as copying, filing, posting, typing, and data entry. The position will require the student to work closely with different programs within the Harward Center, including the Service-Learning Program, the Volunteer Program, the Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area and Coastal Center at Shortridge, and the Events Coordinator.
Must be a Bates student. This student must have solid PC skills (MS Word, MS Excel, Filemaker Pro) and be able to work independently. He or she will need to have experience working with or for community organizations and will need to have performed prior volunteer or service-learning work. The Assistant to the Harward Center may be asked to travel and perform support functions at the Bates Morse Mountain Conservation Area and Coastal Center at Shortridge. The Harward Center Assistant may be asked to post notices at various locations throughout campus and/or to run errands and make deliveries throughout campus.
Specific responsibilities include, but may not be limited to:
- Assist with publicizing Harward Center events
- Prepare materials and perform support work for community projects
- Assist with mailings and mailing lists
- Type up correspondence
- Answer and place calls
- Run general errands
