ILS: Public Services Student Specialist (S9839B)

Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

The Public Services Student Specialist is required to perform many tasks dealing with library materials. Shifting collections, shelving library materials, and performing inventory of the library’s collection are the primary activities. This position requires the student to be reliable and punctual.

The following shifts are available:

Tuesday 8 am – 10 am
Tuesday 2 pm – 4 pm
Thursday 8 am – 10 am
Saturday 12 – 2 pm

Please Note: This position provides no time for studying on the job. All of the on-the-job time is spent doing the duties listed above.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities


REQUIRED EDUCATION: High school completion

DESIRED EXPERIENCE: Library experience, detail work.


REPORTS TO: Assistant College Librarian for Access Services, Audio Supervisor, Public Service Assistants, and Reference Librarians

COORDINATES/WORKS CLOSELY WITH: Other library staff and student employees


ENVIRONMENT: Library stacks, well as computer workstations

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: This student must have visual acuity sufficient to scan information on books and other materials rapidly and repeatedly for extended periods of time, and to read computer screens for up to several hours a day. He or she must also have the muscular strength adequate to lift heavy books. The books in the stacks are frequently dusty. Sturdy footwear is required.

MACHINES & EQUIPMENT USED: Computer systems, barcode scanners, book trucks, telephones, photocopiers, microform reader printers, and audio/video equipment of various kind.
