Summary, Scope, and Responsibilities

Lifeguards are responsible for ensuring the safety of participants utilizing the Tarbell Pool in Merrill Gymnasium. Duties include: Opening and Closing the pool, testing and recording pool chemistry, writing shift reports, scanning and patrolling pool areas for safety, providing care in the case of an emergency or injury, enforcing facility and program policies, providing feedback to participants, providing communication to supervisor and co-workers, providing daily upkeep and maintenance of pool facilities, and being a supportive team player.

Qualifications, Requirements, and Responsibilities

Responsibilities


Provide a safe environment and safe activities for all participants, manage opening and closing of aquatic facilities, monitor facility access control and security, perform regularly scheduled chemical tests for the pool and record findings, provide care in emergency situations when necessary, work events as needed including swim meets, camps, clinics, and lessons, assist with maintenance and cleanliness of all aquatic facilities, educate participants on proper usage of equipment, maintain current Lifeguarding, CPR and First Aid certifications, maintain a strong knowledge of, communicate and enforce all guidelines and procedures, complete reports and safety audits related to maintenance and risk management, be attentive to and report equipment issues to Student Manager and/or supervisor, complete training and regularly utilize the following software programs: WhenToWork, OneNote, Connect2, GoogleDocs, maintain a safe, enjoyable, secure, and clean environment for members, guests, and staff, attend all staff meetings, in-services and trainings, uphold the mission and values and be an active representative of the Department of Athletics, and all other duties assigned as by the supervisor and other Athletics staff

Requirements


Must hold current certification in American Red Cross Lifeguarding, CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer and First Aid, previous lifeguard experience preferred, flexible schedule; hours include mornings, evenings, weekends, holidays and summer if available (minimum of 5 weekday hours or two shifts per week), the ability to effectively monitor and communicate to members, guests, co-workers, and professional staff while maintaining a high standard for customer service and safety, and the ability to lift at least 45 pounds
