Get Involved- For Community Members
Every year Bates partners with local organizations on events that benefit the environment, the college, and the Lewiston-Auburn community.
Participate in Clean Sweep
Every year Bates partners with local non-profit organizations to keep usable items out of the landfill and raise money for charitable causes. While managed by the college, Clean Sweep is fully staffed by volunteers from local non-profit organizations who receive 100% of the proceeds. Organizations sign up to send volunteers who collect, clean, organize, and price items students leave behind when they move out (which fill the ice arena). Then we open the doors for a one-day sale and all of the proceeds go to participating non-profits.
If you are a registered 501(c)3 in the Lewiston-Auburn area and would like to participate, click here to download a application form (due by Tuesday April 30).
Host an EcoService Day project
Honoring the spirit of Earth Day, every April Bates sponsors a day of EcoService in which students, staff, faculty, and their families are invited to come together and work on environmental service projects like clearing trails, picking up litter, tilling gardens, painting bikes racks, and more. It’s a chance for people to get outside and get their hands dirty.
If your organization has a spring project and you are interested in signing up to host volunteers for EcoService Day email Julie Rosenbach.
The Environmental Studies program and Office of Sustainability co-host an EnviroLunch Series every other Thursday during the semester. Open to anyone on campus, the EnviroLunch Series is a way for people to learn more about everyday environmental practices like raising backyard chickens and community-supported agriculture, and major issues facing our region like new open-pit mining regulations.
If you have a topic or speaker you’d like to propose for this series, email Julie Rosenbach.
