Tanaka Research-Study Grant in Asia

Student Grant:  Funds from the Tanaka Memorial Foundation support one 8-10 week, $3,500 student grant for research, study, or internship in Asia during the summer.

Application Deadline:  March 1, 2010

The Tanaka Research-Study Grant is designed to enable students to conduct a research project, internship or other study in Asia for 8-10 weeks. Preference given to students with strong backgrounds in Asian studies and East Asian languages.

Eligibility.  Sophomores and juniors whose academic program will be advanced by research, internship, or study in Asia may apply.  Preference is given to student working in Asian studies, Asian language study, and especially to those pursuing research or study in Asia related to senior theses. Those wishing to pursue an internship must secure the position before they apply. Projects may be conducted in advance of or following a study-abroad program, but should have a Bates faculty member as either primary or secondary advisor. The grant is designed to support 8-10 weeks of full-time summer work.

To apply:

  • Complete an application form for STUDENT RESEARCH (available in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, 121 Lane Hall or online at http://www.bates.edu/Prebuilt/General-Grant-Application2009.pdf). 
  • Provide a one-paragraph abstract of the research project and a description of no more than two pages double-spaced describing the project in great details
  • Include your research goals and methodology.
  • Include the timetable for your project.
  • A budget for your project.
  • Indicate whether this is a research project of your own design or the research of a faculty member or someone outside the College.
  • Explain why you are qualified for this research and how the research relates to your senior thesis or academic program.
  • Attach a letter of support from your project advisor, a Bates faculty member.  Some projects include a research director/advisor outside the College; if this is the case provide a letter of support from the off-campus advisor as well as the Bates faculty advisor. Letters of support are also due on the same day as the deadline.

Deadline and Review:  All materials are due in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, 121 Lane Hall.  PLEASE submit your ORIGINAL PAPERWORK AND 5 COPIES of the APPLICATION FORM AND 5 COPIES of the ENTIRE PROPOSAL for a TOTAL of 6 COMPLETE PACKETS.  Proposal are reviewed by the Student Research Committee.

Financial Responsibility
If for any reason the recipient of the grant is unable to fulfill their project obligations as stated in their proposal, the student will be responsible to repay back the grant money awarded.  If the College has purchased airline tickets that the student does not use, the student is responsible to repay to the College for the price of the ticket.  If the project has been started, then the amount of payment back will be determined by Kerry O'Brien in the Dean of the Faculty's Office.

More Important Information

  • All summer funding is contingent upon a student maintaining a GPA of at least 2.5.
  • You can not use research grant funding to participate in a credit-earning summer academic program or receive academic credit for summer research.
  • This is a research project that involves a full-time (up to 40 hours per week) commitment for eight to ten weeks; therefore you cannot earn additional funds at the College.
  • Tanaka Memorial Research Grant recipients are expected to submit an abstract and a brief progress (two pages) report on their work to the Dean of the Faculty's Office within two weeks of finishing their project  and to present their research during the Parents Weekend Poster Session unless they are studying off campus in the fall.
