LDAP, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server. The following steps describe how to configure LDAP as an option for the Bates directory in the address book of Thunderbird to work with the our server.

C: To test the LDAP configuration:

A. Open Thunderbird on a PC or Mac.
- From the Thunderbird menu, click Tools and then click Account Settings
- In the Account Settings dialog box, select Composition & Addressing from the left side of the screen.
- Under Addressing select Use a different LDAP server:
- Click Edit Directories
B. In the LDAP Directory Servers dialog box, click Add

In the Directory Server Properties dialog box, on the General tab, enter the following information:
- Name = Bates LDAP
- Hostname = ldap.bates.edu
- Base DN = dc=bates,dc=edu
NOTE:The Port Number should be left as the default.
- Click OK to close the Directory Server Properties dialog box.
- Click OK to close the LDAP Directory Servers dialog box.
- In the Account Settings dialog box, open the pull down list under Addressing
- Select the Bates LDAP server you just defined.
- Click OK to exit the Account Settings dialog box.

C: To test the LDAP configuration:
- Click Address Book
- In the Address Book dialog box, select Bates LDAP
- You should be able to type in a last name within the search box and see the results of the lookup
