Update on the Bates Fund

Bates’ monthly newsletter for fundraising volunteers

An Extraordinary Community

March saw the Bates community come together in numerous ways to advance the college’s mission. We kicked off the month with the announcement of March Mania, our annual young alumni donor competition, where Bates achieved its best-ever performance and second-place finish. The We’re In Participation Challenge has everyone charged up; and in just one month, 1,152 alumni made gifts to Bates, boosting participation from 21 to 28 percent! Hundreds of alumni, parents and friends attended 22 Bates events across the nation, culminating with the annual Mount David Society Luncheon during the Mount David Summiton March 30. Indeed, the Bates community is extraordinary, and we can’t thank you enough for beating the Bates drum and asking your peers to support the college. Keep up the great work! With less than three months remaining to achieve our ambitious goals of $6M and 50% alumni participation, we need your continued enthusiasm and support.

President-elect Spencer and Students Make the Case for Financial Aid at Mount David Society Scholarship Luncheon

Nearly 200 alumni, parents, faculty, staff, and students attended this year’s Mount David Society Scholarship Luncheon during the Mount David Summit on March 30, 2012. President-elect Clayton Spencer delivered compelling remarks about the role of financial aid at Bates, noting, “By contributing to financial aid, you are contributing to our fundamental excellence in a way that makes us who we are.” Click here watch the video of President-elect Clayton Spencer’s remarks.

Several students receiving scholarship grants reflected on their Bates experience, including Watson Fellowship awardee, Romina Istratii ’12. Istratii was born in Moldova, raised in Greece, and is a triple major at Bates, doing honors theses in both Chinese and Politics in addition to her Economics thesis. Romina concluded her remarks with a heart felt “thank you” to Bates donors by saying, “It is your kindness and your generosity that give people like me…a way to their dreams.” Click here to watch the video of Romina’s speech.

Don’t Miss the Volunteer Leadership Summit May 5th!!

Join the Board of Trustees, the Bates Fund Executive Committee, the Alumni Council, President Cable, incoming President Clayton Spencer, and fellow Bates Fund, Admission and other staff and volunteers for a great day on campus. • Lisa Jepson Wahlstrom ’80 will share tools and strategies designed to help Bates Fund volunteers during her talk, “Making the Ask: Key Strategies to Make Your Job Easier.”
  • Interim President Nancy Cable, Dean of the Faculty Pam Baker, Dean of Students Tedd Goundie, and Director of Athletics Kevin McHugh will talk about Bates today, including college costs, financial aid, academic quality, and all facets of diversity.
  • Reunion Best Practices and FAQs panel discussion, including lessons learned.
  • Volunteer Recognition Dinner and Reception led by President-elect Clayton Spencer and Interim President Nancy Cable. This is a wonderful event and includes the presentation of Bates’ Best awards to a terrific group of volunteers.

A comprehensive schedule is available online at bates.edu/alumni/vlsschedule. Register by Friday, April 27 at bates.edu/alumni/volunteer-leadership-summit or by calling Kim Goding ’01 at 207-786-6487.

Matching Gifts Heads-Up

Don’t forget to ask about corporate matching gifts in your conversations with donors. This is a great way to significantly increase gifts and help Bates do more good work. Sending matching gifts to Bates is easy, but it requires the donor to take the first step. Please encourage interested donors to visit their employer’s Human Resources department to ask if the company matches charitable contributions and obtain the necessary forms.

Program Updates

Class Agents – The Class Agent Program is Firing On All Cylinders!!

The Class Agents are on fire, as witnessed by the following recent accomplishments:

  • In a show of leadership, almost 80% of Class Agents have made a gift this year, and the Decade Co-Captains are close to 100%.
  • Over 50% of Class Agents now use the Garnet Gateway online tool, thereby providing Bates with up-to-the-minute data on how we’re doing.
  • Our March Blitz resulted in over 70 gifts, moving us ever-closer to the magical 50% participation goal and the $500,000 Challenge gift.

As noted in the above results, participation and dollars both shot up dramatically in the past month, thanks in no small measure to the great work of the Class Agents!! We appreciate your dedication. If you have questions about the Class Agent program, please contact Steve Mortimer.

Parents Fund

Thank you for the continued outreach you are all doing to parents! Please keep up the great work on calls! Parent gifts are starting to come in from our March solicitation letter which was sent to current parents with the new Parents Fund brochure. The Parents Fund brochure will be mailed to all committee members for your reference. The parents of alumni solicitation letters went out last week. We should definitely see some movement on our numbers by the end of this month, but we still have a lot of ground to make up with donor numbers. Last week we had a fantastic and fun conference call with guest speaker Christine Schwartz, Director of Bates Dining Services. Please stay tuned for announcements about future guest speakers for our calls and feel free to pass speaker recommendations to Erin Nelson. Thank you for all you are doing for Bates!

Our very own Parents Fund Committee members Sarah Nixon, P’14 and Maria Kussmaul, P’12, P’16 will both be running in Monday’s Boston Marathon.  Best wishes to both Sarah and Maria! You can read more about Sarah and her daughter Kallie ’14 in this recent article.

BOLD (Bobcats Of the Last Decade)

The final March Mania standings are up on www.marchmania.org with Bates coming in 2nd with 893 donors! Bates received more BOLD gifts during March than ever before in its history. Thank you to all BOLD volunteers for their hard work this past month. We had phonathons in Boston and New York, a Happy Hour in Boston, and volunteers across the country (and around the world) tweeting, emailing, calling, and reminding classmates to give during March. Along with Colby, we kept Trinity from another March Mania win, and helped the BOLD classes reach 30% participation.

Mount David Society Committee

Thank you Mount David Society Committee members for your efforts during our March solicitation Blitz.  We are happy to report that we have received over $3 million in MDS level gifts to the Bates Fund, which is an 11% increase from last year. We currently have 473 donors which is a 17% increase as compared to last year. Our regional MDS recognition dinners launch this month, with the first one on April 19 in San Francisco. For a full list of events, please visit http://www.bates.edu/mount-david-society/society-events/. We look forward to seeing you at these events!

Reunion 2012

Thank you, Reunion Gift Committees, for all of your hard work! Please continue to reach out to your classmates to ask them to join the “We’re In” Challenge and your Class Gift with a gift of any size. For more information, please visit bates.edu/in.
