Fiscal Year 2012 Brings New Leadership, New Goals
On July 1, Bates opened the books on a new fiscal year with Bates Fund goals of $6 million, 48% alumni participation, and 40% parent participation. Buoyed by all-time-high alumni and parent engagement and stellar performance over the past two years, the College is eager to work with volunteers to achieve these goals.Bates is equally excited to welcome Trustees Sarah Pearson ’75 and Bill Carey ’82, P’13, P’14 into new roles as co-chairs of the Bates Fund and Bates Fund Executive Committee. Currently Chief Development Officer for the Broad Institute in Cambridge, Mass., Sarah brings a wealth of expertise from a successful career in fundraising. Prior to her current role, she served as Vice President for Alumni Relations and Development at Northwestern University. Bill has volunteered for Bates in numerous capacities and last year co-chaired the Mount David Society. Husband of Scarlett ’82 and parent of Charlie ‘13 and Maggie ‘14, Bill currently is the President of F-Squared Retirement Solutions, a subsidiary of F-Squared Investments in Newton, Mass.
Trustees Set Unprecedented Pace
As of September 14, 100% of Bates Trustees are on board with a gift or pledge to the 2011-12 Bates Fund. This is the third year in a row that the Trustees have achieved 100% participation early in the giving year. Preliminary commitments total $900,000 – this is 11.5% more than last year and half increased their pledge by 20% or more with an average commitment of $22,500. These commitments help to set a strong pace for the year and position us well to achieve our lofty goals.
As Bates Fund volunteers, please make your gift or pledge early in the year so you can ask your peers to make their gift with confidence! Payment is not due until June 30, 2012.

Class Agent Program – Exciting News
You talked, we listened. Guided by Class Agents’ comments, Class Agent co-chairs Irwin Flashman and Kathy Overbye are driving the development of a number of creative new programs and approaches intended to provide Class Agents with the tools, skills and information they need to be top notch agents. These include (a) online and on-site fundraising training, (b) guidance on using the Garnet Gateway volunteer fundraising system, (c) regional “community building” events for Bates Fund volunteers, (d) a website designed specifically for Bates Fund volunteers, and (e) a new philosophy on making assignments in order to improve the experience and success of our Class Agents. Because of the above improvements, many class agents will not receive their assignments until late January or early February. Between now and then, the Bates Student Callers will be making calls to alumni and parents, as will some Class Agents. Bates Advancement will continue with mailings, events and other programs. Stay tuned for more details, or contact Steve Mortimer at email@example.com questions.
The Bates Fund Volunteer Center
The Bates Fund Volunteer Center website will debut in early November as the go-to place for all of your needs. You will be able to see how we’re doing, get to Bates news on pretty much any topic, access the Garnet Gateway, obtain forms, view training videos, and much more. In addition, each volunteer group, i.e. Class Agents, Parents, Reunion, BOLD, and MDS, will have its own customized page. Additional content will be added to the site on an ongoing basis. We have a long list of what we think might make your roles easier and/or more rewarding. That said, site content will be driven in large part by your feedback, so once it’s up and running, please let us know what you like or need.
Student Calling Program Hits the Ground Running
The Student Calling program for FY12 has begun. Twenty students began calling alumni on October 9th and raised $16,397 from 173 alumni during just their first week. The students are calling all alumni, regardless of giving history, who are not assigned to a volunteer. They are looking forward to calling Parents, BOLD alumni and alumni in Reunion years during the next month.
Garnet Gateway Online Tool Update
We are hard at work finding solutions to some of your most requested enhancements. For example, in a few months you’ll be able to have a new password emailed to you immediately by just clicking a link. More announcements to come in future e-Newsletters.
An Opportunity for Alumni Age 70+
From now through December 31, those age 70+ may make a tax-smart gift to Bates by taking advantage of the IRA Charitable Roll-Over, a provision that allows you to direct up to $100,000 of your required minimum distributions to be directed to charity. Contact Erin Martin, Bates Director of Gift Planning, at 207-786-8373 or firstname.lastname@example.org for details.
Thank you for all you do for the Bates Fund!
