Women’s track opens outdoor strong in Orono

The Bates women’s track and field team opened the outdoor season on Saturday with an impressive effort in a tri-meet at the University of Maine. The host Black Bears won the team scoring with 147 points, followed by New Hampshire with 136 and Bates with 112.

Competing in Friday’s preliminary heats of the 800-meter run, Bates senior Elizabeth “Bud” Arens posted the ninth fastest time among 15 competitors, missing Saturday’s final by only one place.

Bates senior Elizabeth “Bud” Arens will compete in her third consecutive NCAA Track & Field Championship meet this week, representing the Bobcats in the 800 meters at the 2013 indoor nationals, to be held March 8-9 at North Central College in Naperville, Ill.

Bates women’s track and field’s distance medley relay team became Bates’ second-fastest DMR squad in program history on Saturday at the Tufts Last Chance Meet, one place short of reaching nationals in the event.
