Wireless access points are now available in dorms, some academic buildings, and the Ladd Library for students, staff, and faculty to use with personally owned computers. Operating system updates and up to date anti-virus coverage (Sophos, Norton, or McAfee) must be current to join the wireless network as it is for the wired method.

Connect by only one method at a time, do not attempt to connect with wired (using an ethernet cord) and wireless at the same time.

A. Wireless access is not available in every building on campus. Test the signal to see if it is strong enough. Don't forget, wired access is available (network jacks with blue stickers) via CCAA with steady connectivity in more places on campus.

B. Remember that as more users connect to the wireless access points, the speed of the connection decreases.

Signal strength is indicated by the number of bars; similar to a cell phone indicator - several bars becoming taller, the better the signal.

While Bates ILS is trying to provide as secure a wireless service as possible, be careful leaving your personal computer in a public area with sensitive information for others to view or manipulate. Wireless is inherently not as secure a connection for passwords, etc.

Wireless network cards can be purchased from Sales and Service, 110 Russell St., 786-6376

As always, please be sure to keep saving a copy of your documents to your paris account for safekeeping. Don't wait until the last minute to count on the network connectivity, save often!

For all the benefits of the Bates network, use the Bates wireless access points to connect to the network, not a personally owned device. Routers, hubs, airports, etc. are not allowed, and if found, access will be disabled.
