Caroline Thomas '09

Playing women’s lacrosse in the New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) is one of the most competitive athletic endeavors in Division III. Often times NESCAC teams make up half of the top 10 teams in all of DIII each season.

The regular season consists of a 14-game schedule, including nine games against New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) opponents. The top eight teams in the regular season standings qualify for the NESCAC Championship, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Division III Women's Lacrosse Championship.

2008 Season Recap

All-America midfielder Molly Wagner became the women’s lacrosse team’s all-time points leader in the final game of the 2008 season, with 182. One game earlier, Bates defeated Bowdoin for the first time since 1993. The potent Bobcats placed three attackers (Caroline Thomas, Morgan Maciewicz and Molly Radis), one defender (Elizabeth Denver) and Wagner on the all-region team.

Other highlights included victories over Division II Southern New Hampshire, Williams, Connecticut College.

Thomas enjoyed a breakout season in 2008, scoring 38 goals and adding 15 assists, the most productive offensive season for a Bobcat since 2005. Maciewicz (28g, 13a), Radis (26g, 7a) and Wagner (22g, 7a) all scored 20-plus goals, and Bates caused an average of 12.07 turnovers per game, the 15th-best average in Division III.

First-year Mara Krueger took over the starting goalkeeper's job early in the season and immediately became a solid member of the NESCAC goalies' society, with a goals-against average (9.64) that ranked 24th in Division III.
