Latest NewsWomen's Lacrosse Season Ends with Loss to Top-Ranked Middlebury 4/24/2004 LEWISTON, Maine – The Middlebury women's lacrosse proved why it deserves the nation's number one ranking on Saturday, defeating Bates 18-4 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game on Campus Avenue Field. Bates finished the 2004 season 4-10, 0-9 NESCAC, while Middlebury finished the season 13-0, 9-0. The Panthers earned the No. 1 seed in the NESCAC Championship tournament. Bates did not advance to the tournament. Middlebury got out of the gate quickly, scoring the first five goals of the game in less than six minutes. Bates scored the next two goals to cut the lead to three, but the Panthers responded with a 10-0 run to lead 15-2 in the opening minutes of the second half. Schuyler Winstead scored four goals for Middlebury, while Nuala O'Donahoe added three goals and three assists for the Panthers. Alison Perenecevich, Claire Edelin, Kim Walker and Liza Humes each scored a pair of goals for Middlebury, and Michele Bergofsky added a goal and three assists. Sonija Parson '06 (Washington, D.C.) led Bates with two goals, while Carrie Smith '04 (Chevy Chase, Md.) added a goal and an assist. |
