BRUNSWICK, Maine -- The Bates College women's track and field team finished third, missing second by the slimmest of margins, out of four teams Friday night in the Maine State Indoor Championships at Bowdoin. Bowdoin won the tightly packed meet with 164 points, followed by Colby with 147, Bates with 146 and Southern Maine with 119. Senior Vantiel Elizabeth Duncan (Topsham, Maine) and junior Sara Ellen Godek (Gilford, N.H.) finished 1-2 in both the shot put and the weight throw to lead the Bobcats' scoring. Duncan had a shot put of 43-09.74 and a weight throw of 57-04.25, her best in two years. Meanwhile Godek was at 37-06.50 in the shot put and 50-10.75 in the weight throw, scoring her first provisional qualifying mark for the NCAA Championships. Other Bates highlights included a victory in the 4x400 relay, with first-year Ansley Flanagan (Roxbury, Conn.), junior Dana Lindauer (Needham, Mass.), sophomore Tina Tobin (Lowell, Mass.) and senior Molly Radis (Peaks Island, Maine) finishing in 4:06.14, 2.34 seconds ahead of runner-up Bowdoin. It was the second event win for Radis, who also finished first out of 17 runners in the 600 meters (1:39.62). Other top three finishers included:
