Bates men a model of efficiency in putting Williams away, 74-56

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's basketball team extended its school-record win streak to 11 and took over sole possession of first place in the NESCAC with an efficient 74-56 win over Williams College Saturday at Alumni Gymnasium. The Bobcats (14-2, 4-0 NESCAC) turned the ball over only four times in the game and shot 49.1 percent from the floor, including 50 percent on 3-pointers. Junior Rob Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) struggled shooting (6-for-16) for the second straight game, after registering season lows of five points and five rebounds Friday night against Middlebury, but he still had 14 points and nine rebounds for Bates. "I think we have the best depth in the NESCAC, from (player) 1 through 15," said Stockwell. "Anyone on our team can come in and do the job, and that's exactly what we're doing right now." Sophomore Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) and junior Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) each scored 13. Ray added four assists and four steals. For the second game in a row, Bates held its opponent to a season-low point total. Middlebury mustered just 47 points against Bates Friday night. Andrew Newton had game highs of 17 points and 12 rebounds for Williams (14-4, 3-1 NESCAC), which entered the game tied for the league lead with Bates. Chris Shalvoy added 11 points and eight assists, and the Ephs' leading scorer, Chris Rose, was held to 10 points on 3-of-12 shooting. Aided by 11 points from off the bench, seven from sophomore Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.) and four from first-year Mark Westhuis (Singapore), Bates grabbed a 40-26 halftime lead. Bates shot 6-for-10 on 3-pointers in the period, including 2-of-2 by senior Sean Cahill (Worcester, Mass.), who scored six points and had a team-high six assists, and 2-of-3 by Wholey. The Bates lead was extended to as many as 24 points, at 56-32 with 12:51 to play, and the Ephs, who made 10 of their 30 attempted 3-pointers, were unable to mount a comeback. Halloran scored nine points on 4-of-5 shooting for the Bobcats in his second strong game in as many days. "All he needed was a little bit of confidence, and now he's playing just great," said Ray of his teammate.
