NEW HAVEN, Conn. -- The Bates College women's squash team had little doubt where it stood after a 2-2 weekend at the Yale University Round Robin. The Bobcats put away fellow NESCAC programs Connecticut College and Hamilton, each by 9-0 scores, but were similarly shut out by Ivy League powers No. 1 Yale and the No. 5 University of Pennsylvania.
Strong showings against the Ivy Leaguers came with Bates' No. 2 Kelsey Engman (Haverford, Pa.) and No. 6 Caroline Lemoine (Natick, Mass.), both of whom took games in their 1-3 losses to their Penn opponents.
The match of the weekend, in coach John Illig's estimation, was Bates' No. 9, rookie Margot Webel (Locust Valley, N.Y.), who took her Yale opponent the distance before dropping a 2-3 contest played before both full teams, in a match that would have given Bates its first-ever individual victory over a Yale opponent, male or female. Webel surprisingly won her first game 9-1 before Yale’s Mandel righted her ship in cruising to a definitive 9-0 win in the second game. Webel stunned the Yale contingency by winning the third game 9-5, and led 4-0 in the fourth game before bowing out 6-9, 0-9 in the fourth and fifth games.
"Margot's effort was heroic and inspirational to the rest of the team, in Bates showing that it can not only win points but win games against the national champions," said Illig.
Bates will host Colby College at the Bates Squash Center on Thursday, Jan. 26.
