Stockwell reaches 1,000 career points as Bates men win 13th straight

LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior forward Rob Stockwell led the Bates College men's basketball team with 19 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and 10 rebounds in a 70-58 NESCAC win over Connecticut College Friday night. The Bobcats (16-2, 5-0 NESCAC) extended their school-record win streak to 13 games with the win. The visiting Camels (11-8, 1-4 NESCAC) have lost five of their last six games. Sophomore Charles Stone led Connecticut College with 16 points on 8-of-10 shooting from the floor, to go with a game-high 11 rebounds. Billy Karis added 11 points. Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) became the 26th Bates man to reach 1,000 points. Needing 13 to reach the plateau entering the game, Stockwell got it with a pivot move in the paint around the Camels' Ulises Veras and, despite getting fouled by Stone, hitting a 10-foot bank shot with 13:39 to play in the game. Bates supporters inside Alumni Gymnasium were waiting for the moment. The crowd erupted when Stockwell's shot fell, and chanted "Stockwell! Stockwell!" as he stepped to the free-throw line. "I'd like to say (getting to 1,000 points) wasn't even on my mind, but I guess it was," said Stockwell, who missed the foul shot and had his struggles, as did his teammates, getting shots to fall for much of the game, particularly early on. "It took me a while to settle down." "I see the names of the other players who have scored 1,000 points for Bates, and it's an honor to be there with them. But it's really a team award. I wouldn't have gotten there without Zak Ray as my teammate, or without my teammates hitting so many outside shots and opening up the inside for me." Stockwell finished 8-for-19 shooting from the floor, including 5-for-9 in the second half. As a team, the Bobcats were only 10-for-28 in the first half, but came on strong with 56.5 percent shooting in the second period against a Camels team that stayed in the game until the closing minutes. A pair of free throws by the Camels' Christian Mosley closed the lead Bates had held since early in the first half to 50-48, with 6:21 remaining in the game. But sophomore Bryan Wholey answered with a 3-pointer at the other end, beginning a 14-4 run over four minutes that secured the win for Bates. Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) finished with 18 points for Bates, and sophomore Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.) scored 11.
