January 28,
2006
LEWISTON, Maine -- Junior forward Rob Stockwell had his third straight double-double and ninth of the season to lead the Bates College men's basketball team to a 68-47 NESCAC victory over Wesleyan University Saturday. The Bobcats (17-2, 6-0 NESCAC) have now won a school-record 14 straight games. Stockwell (Temple, N.H.) had 14 points and 10 rebounds, both game highs, for Bates. Sean Cahill (Worcester, Mass.) added 10 points, while Zak Ray (Bangor, Maine) and Bryan Wholey (Marshfield, Mass.) had nine apiece. Junior Jimmy Shepherd (Charlevoix, Mich.) led Wesleyan (6-12, 0-6 NESCAC) with 11 points, including three 3-pointers. Junior Jared Ashe (Stamford, Conn.) added 10. Bates forced 20 Wesleyan turnovers, committing 16 of their own, and outrebounded the Cardinals 46-28, including 20 offensive boards. The Bobcats led wire-to-wire. They steadily built their lead throughout the first half, and sophomore Bryan Wholey's 3-pointer with 2 seconds left in the half gave them a 37-22 halftime advantage. Bates outscored Wesleyan 14-0 on second-half points in the period. A 19-8 Bates spurt began the second half, keyed by 3-pointers from Cahill and Pat Halloran (Plymouth, N.H.), and a pair of hoops by Damon McGinn (Thetford, Vt.). Bates junior John Lattimer (Atlanta, Ga.) came up with the best play of the game with six minutes left in the game, knocking the ball out of Shepherd's hands, diving for the ball and tapping it over his head to Halloran, who streaked downcourt for a layup.
