Tanaka Memorial Foundation Research-Study Grant in Asia

Student Grant:  Funds from the Tanaka Memorial Foundation support one 8-10 week, $3,500 student grant for research, study, or internship in Asia for the summer.

Deadline:  Wednesday, March 3, 2008

The Tanaka Research-Study Grant is designed to enable students to conduct a research project, internship or other study in Asia for 8-10 weeks.  Preference will be given to students with strong backgrounds in Asian Studies and east Asian languages.  

Eligabiltiy:  Sophomores and juniors whose academic program will be advanced by research, internship, or study in Asia may apply.  Preference is given to students working in Asian Studies, Asian language study, and especially to those pursuing research or study in Asia related to senior theses.  Those wishing to pursue an internship must secure the position  before they apply.  Projects may be conducted in advance of or following a study-abroad program, but should have a Bates faculty member as either primary or secondary advisor. The grant is designed to support 8-10 weeks of full-time summer work.

To apply:

  • Complete an application form for STUDENT RESEARCH (available in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, 121 Lane Hall or online at    www.bates.edu/Prebuilt/General-Grant-Application.pdf ).
  • Provide a one-paragraph abstract of the research project and a description of no more than 500 words describing the project in greater detail. 
  • Include your research goals and methodology.
  • Include the timetable for your project.
  • Include a budget for your project.
  • Indicate whether this is an independent research project of your own design or the research of a faculty member or someone outside the College.
  • Explain why you are qualified for this research and how the research relates to your senior thesis or academic program.
  • Attach a letter of support from your project advisor, a Bates Faculty member.  Some projects include a research director/advisor outside the College; if this is the case provide a letter of support from the off-campus advisor as well as a Bates faculty advisor.  Letters of support are also due on March 3, 2008.

Deadline and Review:  All materials are due on March 3, 2008 in the Office of the Dean of the Faculty, 121 Lane Hall. PLEASE submit your ORIGINAL PAPERWORK AND 5 COPIES of the APPLICATION FORM AND 5 COPIES of the ENTIRE PROPOSAL for a TOTAL of 6 COMPLETE PACKETS. Proposals are reviewed by the Student Research Committee.
