Women's squash upsets Cornell to claim ninth place at Team Nationals

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- The Bates College women's squash team scored an upset 6-3 victory over Cornell University on Sunday to claim ninth place at the College Squash Association Howe Cup Team Nationals at Harvard University.
The Bobcats were seeded 10th at the tournament, while Cornell, which beat Bates 7-2 on Dec. 3, were seeded ninth. Both teams were placed in the Kurtz Cup (B Division), for teams rated No. 9 through 16.
The Bobcats showed impressive depth against the Big Red, winning in spots No. 4 through No. 9 plus the No. 10 exhibition.
On Friday, Bates won every game in shutting out No. 15 Vassar College 9-0, and advanced to play No. 11 Bowdoin College on Saturday.
The Bobcats defeated the Polar Bears for the third time in as many matches this season, 8-1, winning at positions 2 through 9.
The squash season for both the Bates women's and men's teams will conclude March 3-5, with the Individual Nationals held at Amherst College.
