Three from women's squash team compete at Individual Nationals

AMHERST, Mass. -- Bates college junior Kelsey Engman and senior Melissa Lue Yen each won their first-round matches at the College Squash Association Individual Championships at Amherst College, placing them among the top 48 players in the nation this year.

Playing in the Holleran Division, or B Draw, Engman (Haverford, Pa.) defeated Amherst's Caroline Shannon 9-6, 9-4, 9-1 to advance to the round of 16, where she dropped a 9-2, 9-2, 9-4 decision to top-seeded Carly Grabowski of Princeton.

Engman dropped to the Holleran second round consolation, where she defeated Kendell Anders of Denison 6-9, 9-3, 9-1, 9-6, before falling in the semifinal round of that bracket to Williams' Catie Warner, 9-3, 9-6, 9-4.

Lue Yen (Kingston, Jamaica) outlasted Bowdoin's Emilie McKenna in a marathon, 9-5, 10-9, 6-9, 1-9, 9-7, then lost to sixth-seeded Katia Stipinovich of St. Lawrence 9-1, 9-0, 9-0.

Lue Yen dropped into the Holleran second round consolation bracket, where she beat Colby's Stacy Petro 9-1, 9-2, 9-1 before losing in the bracket semifinal to Cornell's Alex Cornett 9-4, 9-3, 9-0.

Also playing in the Holleran Division was Bates sophomore Charlotte Gerrish (Rye, N.Y.), who lost in the first round to eighth-seeded Kate Whipple of Williams 9-1, 9-1, 9-4.

Gerrish dropped into the consolation bracket, where she defeated Amherst's Emily O'Brien 9-5, 9-2, 9-6, then lost to Amherst's Caroline Shannon in an epic battle, 2-9, 7-9, 9-5, 10-9, 10-8.
