Diapers and the Divine: Motherhood as Spiritual Journey -  The Reverend Doctor Jodi Cohen Hayashida today March 9th, 4:30-6:00 PM Skelton Lounge – Midnight feedings, lack of sleep, unpredictable routine…Who has time for a faith life>  Parenthood can throw even the most grounded of religious lives into chaos, but that same chaos hold the promise of deeper and more authentic faith.  Rev. Hayashida will explore the deep grace she has discovered in that meeting place between her life as a religious professional and her life as a relatively new mother.  Rev. Hayashida is the minister of First Universalist Church of Auburn.  She received her D. Min. at Meadville/ Lombard Theological School.”  An installment in the monthly series “SPIRITUAL JOURNEYS: STORIES OF THE SOUL.”  Sponsored by the Office of the Chaplain.

Upcoming events and announcements

NOTICE TO ALL STUDENTS: REGISTRATION FOR FALL 2006 COURSES AND ON-CAMPUS SHORT TERM 2006 units continues through 4:00 pm this Friday, March 10th.  Students should meet with their advisors to discuss course selections and have their advisor holds removed. Department chairs may act as proxies for any faculty advisors who are not on campus this semester. To register for an Independent Study (360/s50) students complete the Independent Study form available in Libbey Forum or online at: http://abacus.bates.edu/admin/offices/reg/IndependentStudyForm.pdf. Short Term s50 forms must be submitted by Friday at 4:00pm. Remember, this week students may register for up to 4 courses for the fall semester. During the registration adjustment period (Add/Drop) students may elect to add a 5th course. If you have any questions, please come to Libbey Forum between 9:00 a.m-4:00 p.m.

Friday, March 10th is -  "NATIONAL WOMEN AND GIRLS HIV/AIDS AWARENESS DAY" - HIV/AIDS is increasingly affecting more women in our community, nation, and world.   In acknowlegement of this, the Maine Aids Alliance is sponsoring events around the state to educate one another by listening to the stories of women and girls personally affected by HIV/AIDS.  All are invited to Skelton Lounge at 4:00pm Friday,  March 10th. Our speaker, a 43 yr. old woman residing in Lewiston, has offered to share her experiences and insights about awareness of a disease that does not discriminate. Free HIV Testing for Women  -   Friday, March 10  10a - 3p - STD Clinic   79 Main St. Auburn  (Across from Gritty's) - No appointment necessary for this special test day.

SCIENCE & MATH PANEL - FRIDAY, MARCH 10th at 4:15 PM at Muskie Archives.  Join us for a catered dinner after the panel!  (RSVP to Lucia at ltierero@bates.edu)  Come hear the experiences of many accomplished women in biology, chemistry, environmental studies, geology, public health, and math! They will speak of their professional lives and their successes as women in science. Following the panel, there will be a catered dinner to allow further discussion with the panelists. This weekend, the FILMBOARD is showing Good night, and Good Luck.  George Clooney’s second directorial effort, the film chronicles broadcast journalist Edward R. Murrow’s fight against Senator McCarthy’s fear mongering and its resulting censorship.  Nominated for several Academy Awards, including Best Actor and Best Screenplay, the film has received some of the strongest reviews of the year.  As always, admission is only $1.  Friday & Saturday: 7:00, 9:30.  Sunday: 2:00 & 4:30.

COMEDIAN KYLE CEASE will perform a free show in the Mays Center at 9 pm, on Friday night. He appeared in 10 Things I Hate About You and Not Another Teen Movie. In May, his ½ hour special on Comedy Central will debut! He is an amazing comedian and this is one show you don’t want to miss. Sponsored by CHC.

Ménage à Trois Masquerade !!!!!  Mardi Gras is officially over, but its spirit is alive at Bates. The French club is having its first annual MARDI GRAS DANCE. All you need to wear is a mask!   Come have fun, get a free mask, and catch your share of beads the Friday. (No flashing necessary, we will be tossing out everything for free!)  Funds will go toward helping the victims of hurricane Katrina, whose devastating effects are still visible in New Orleans.  Tickets go on sale today  at a cost of $3. At the door, you pay $4. Cool catch: Come in a group of 3 (ménage à trios = threesome) and the third person is free (i.e. $6 for the group !)  Venue: The Little Room (old game room) Date: Friday 10th March, 10:30 pm to 2 am

BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, Saturday, March 11th - only $10 round-trip!  This Saturday the Student Activities Office is happy to be offering another great opportunity to visit one of America's great cities - Boston.  The luxury coach leaves from in front of Chase Hall at 8 am, and leaves Boston at 8 pm, giving you about 9 hours to visit friends, see historical landmarks and even do some shopping.  To sign up and pay come to the Student Activities Office in Chase Hall.

DISCOVER SCUBA WEEKEND - Learn more about scuba diving and the Bates Scuba Society this weekend!!!!!! Come eat free peel and eat shrimp, muscles, and clams at the Marche Station this Thursday night at dinner in Commons.  Come and have a good time at the Under the Sea Dance this Friday night in the Little Room.  Feel free to come wearing your dive gear, bathing suits, and other tropical attire.  No admission fee. Come try out scuba diving for free this Saturday at 11:30am in Tarbell pool. Pool sessions will be about a half hour long and taught by our very own residential PADI certified dive instructor.  Sign-ups will be held at the Marche Station this Thursday night and at the dance this Friday night.  Email ghenkes@bates.edu for any further questions about this event.
