LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College men's lacrosse team jumped out to a 7-0 lead after 7 1/2 minutes en route to a 19-4 victory over Mount Ida College Wednesday evening at Campus Avenue Field.

The Bobcats (4-0) scored the game's first 14 goals before the Mustangs (0-1) got on the scoreboard with John Lightbown's unassisted goal with 10:06 remaining in the third quarter.

Bates sophomore Mike Medeiros (Concord, Mass.) led the attack with five points on two goals and three assists. Junior Matt Erisman (Nantucket, Mass.) added four points with a goal and three assists. Junior Wes Couture (South Hadley, Mass.), first-year Sean O'Brien (Ballston Lake, N.Y.) and junior John Kinnane (Little Compton, R.I.) added two goals apiece.

Lightbown (Melrose, Mass.) and senior Matt Ramieor (Arlington, Mass.) each scored a pair of goals for the Mustangs. Junior Kyle Bowler (Glastonbury, Conn.) made nine saves for Mount Ida.

Paul Kazarian (Providence, R.I.), Will Paddock (Denver, Colo.), Peter Boston (Acton, Mass.) and Tom O'Connor (Loudonville, N.Y.) all made saves for Bates. Kazarian had five of the Bobcats' 12 total saves.

It is the best start to a season for Bates since at least 1997.

Bates dominated the game in shots (38-16), ground balls (46-26) and faceoffs (21-5).

Bates plays at Trinity College on Saturday at 1 p.m.; Mount Ida is at UMass-Dartmouth on Saturday at 1 p.m.
