Accessing Medical Services

If you are a Bates College student, you may visit the Health Center free of charge when school is in session. Students with any illness or injury are urged to come promptly to the Health Center. Nurses are on duty 24 hours a day; they handle many common conditions and make referrals as needed. To speak with a registered nurse confidentially, simply sign in as you enter by the front desk. It is not necessary to disclose the reason for your visit at the reception desk. When necessary, you may be referred to our nurse practitioner or physician. These health care providers are seen by appointments on weekdays. When arriving for a medical appointment, please sign in at the reception area. All visits are strictly confidential and you will not be charged for the consultation. Laboratory tests and vaccinations may be billed. Prescriptions may be obtained at one of the several local pharmacies. When picking up prescriptions it is helpful to bring any private insurance card you may have to reduce the cost of your medication.

The Health Center includes 4 inpatient beds. Staffed by nurses around the clock, the Health Center is a place where students requiring care, but not hospitalization, may stay for medical or psychological concerns. A physician is on call at all times. In case of an emergency, students may be seen or taken by ambulance to one of the two nearby hospitals. There is also a student EMT service available on campus for emergencies.
