Bates Jazz Band to perform

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Jazz Band will perform a full program of big band jazz at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1, in the Olin Arts Center Concert Hall on the Bates College campus. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Under the direction of Mark Manduca, a member of the Bates applied music faculty, the program features Benny Goodman's "Stompin' at the Savoy," Count Basie's "Pressure Cooker," Kenny Dorham's "Blue Bossa," Jerome Kern's "You Are Too Beautiful" and John Coltrane's "Naima," among others.

The concert also presents arrangements and compositions of local artists, including "The Ready to Use Blues" by Craig Skeffington, South Portland High School band director, and Johnny Mandel's "Emily," arranged by Terry White, band director at Cape Elizabeth Middle School. A jazz improvisation combo project, directed by Rick Gordan, will perform between big band sets. For more information, call the Olin Arts Center at 207-786-6135.
