Hernandez to discuss making paper from banana waste

LEWISTON, Maine -- Carlos Hernandez, a professor of agricultural waste management from EARTH College in Costa Rica who has developed a commerically viable way to make paper from the discarded stems of banana plants, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 15, in Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

Hernandez, who specializes in waste management infrastructure for rural communities in developing countries and alternative paper-making technology, received bachelor's and master's degrees in civil engineering from the University of Virginia and Purdue University. He received his Ph.D. in resource development from Michigan State University.
