Conference on psychology, violence and conflict resolution to be held at Bates Oct. 8

LEWISTON, Maine -- "Psychology, Violence and Conflict Resolution: Into the 21st Century," a conference intended for people in the fields of education, law enforcement, public policy and mental health will be held from 9 a.m. to 5:15 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8 in Chase Hall, Bates College. The public is invited to attend free of charge. Lunch will not be provided. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. in Chase Hall, Bates College.

After opening remarks by James W. Carignan, dean of Bates College, and Richard V. Wagner, professor of psychology at Bates, Dr. Lenore Walker of Denver, Colo., executive director of the Domestic Violence Institute and author of "The Battered Woman," will discuss "Domestic Violence: Roots and Resolution" from 9:15 to 10:30 a.m.

Dr. Kathleen Kostelny of Chicago, Ill., an expert on the psychological effects of violence on children and author of "No Place to Be a Child: Growing Up in a War Zone," will discuss "Community Violence: Gangs in Chicago" from 10:45 to noon.

Edward Cairns, professor of psychology at the University of Ulster, Northern Ireland, will discuss "Ethnic Violence: The Case of Northern Ireland" from 1 to 2:15 p.m.

"Where Do We Go From Here?" a panel presentation featuring Walker, Kostelny and Cairns, will be held from 4 to 5:15 p.m.

Sponsored by the Department of Psychology at Bates, the conference is the first presentation of the Bates College Muskie Millennium Series. Next in the series will be Susan Hudson discussing the history and future of Franco women at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14, in Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College.
