Bates Modern Dance Company to perform

LEWISTON, Maine -- The Bates College Modern Dance Company in Concert will showcase the performance and choreography talents of student, faculty and alumni artists during Celebrate Bates! Parents and Families Weekend at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Oct. 1, and Saturday, Oct. 2, at the Bates College Schaeffer Theatre on College Street. The public is invited to attend free of charge with no reservations accepted. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Under the artistic direction of Marcy Plavin, an ensemble of approximately 20 student dancers will present a diverse series of pieces, including six sections from "Introducing!..," a piece choreographed by New York-based dancer Michael Foley, Bates College class of 1989, that includes both monologue and movement. The performance also includes dances choreographed by four Bates students, including sophomore Devon Fitchett of Woburn, Mass.; junior Laura Iverson of Madison, Wis.; sophomore Laura Medina of Burke, Va.; and sophomore Kate Nies of Portsmouth, N.H.

The works, some lighthearted and others considering more profound issues, include Iverson's "Quite Done," an upbeat piece about tension and release, set to African rhythms; Medina's "Break Their Hold Over Me," a work about conquering obstacles and listening to the heart, set to the music of Tori Amos; Fitchett's "Empty," an exploration of the loss of a loved one, set to a ballad by Cassandra Wilson; and Nies's "If You Could Catch," a piece about the all-encompassing nature of depression and madness, with music by Tori Amos. For more information about the performances, call the Schaeffer Theatre Box Office at 207-786-6161.
