Philosopher to discuss the birth of character at Bates

LEWISTON, Maine -- Ian Hacking, a professor of philosophy at the University of Toronto who specializes in the philosophy of science, language and mathematics as well as philosophical questions about psycho-pathology, will speak on the birth of character at 8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 30, in Chase Hall Lounge, Bates College. The public is invited to attend free of charge.

"L'Ame réécrit," the translation of Hacking's book "Rewriting the Soul," won the Prix Psyché, awarded annually for the best book published in French on topics in psychiatry and psychology. Hacking is the author of several books, including "Multiple Personality and Politics of Memory" as well as "The Taming of Chance" and "The Emergence of Probability," focusing on the philosophy and history of probability. His earlier books include "Why Does Language Matter to Philosophy?" and "Logic of Statistical Inference."
