Yet Short Term, unveiled in 1966, was supposed to be square, man, a way for students to take extra courses and hustle through Bates in three years. But the initial no-frills, classroom-based courses like "Elements of Art" and "Introduction to the New Testament" quickly gave way to the faculty’s better ideas about what a warm-weather term should be.
