Having a positive FL experience is not a science but an art.  The art is finding the balance and fit for the FL, coach, and athletes of your team.  You need to discover what works for you – communication is key.

"Worst Practices"

"Best Practices"

∙Being a spectator

∙Being too formal

∙Bonding only to coach

∙Liaisonship feels like a burden

∙Maintain "athletics vs academics" perspective

∙Assume you know it all

∙Bad timing

∙Get involved—sit on bench, go to practice, team dinners, etc, as appropriate

∙Use informal opportunities—walking across campus, meals, bus rides, etc

∙Get to know all of team (by name at least)

∙Remember why involved with liaison program~ e.g., to build relationships

∙Think of athletics as a co-curricular learning opportunity for all involved

∙Ask for ideas from all parties (students, coaches, faculty)

∙Pre- or early season/semester interactions—build foundation when there is more time
