Students, faculty, and staff were asked to keep a diary for a day in late winter term 2006 from midnight to midnight. Note that it was not a typical day in that it was close to the end of the semester and was an exceptionally warm spring day. 12 students, 4 faculty, 3 coaches, and 1 staff submitted day diaries. These are their stories…
General Observations
- Although each group averaged about the same amount of sleep, all faculty and staff were asleep at the start of the period whereas 25% of students were. Also, the amount of sleep students got was much more variable than the other groups
- Nearly all students noted the 3 meals that they ate during the course of the day. Many faculty and coaches missed meals
- The number of hours of work/school time varied by group with students. Including extra/co-curricular activities, students averaged 7.88 hours, faculty 9 hours, and coaches 11 hours. Each group spent ~20% of their work/school time “in class” or “in practice”.
- Coaches spent approximately ¼ of their work time (~2.5 hours) engaged in recruiting activities, with the out-of-season coach committing significantly much more time to this. It should be noted that the time required for recruiting activities varies greatly by time of year.
- Activities for mental and physical health included working out, music, yoga and painting, spending time with family
- Most shared interesting insights into themselves or the world around them (some of these are included in the snapshots)
