Volunteer organizers wanted for National Day of ServiceThe College's third annual National Day of Service is scheduled for Saturday, April 21. Last spring, nearly 300 people in 12 U.S. cities participated: alumni from the classes of 1950 to 2005, students, incoming members of the Class of 2010, parents and family members. In 2007, we would like to expand the program to other cities. If you could help organize a group of Batesies to tackle a one-day service project in your hometown, please contact Beth Sheppard at esheppar@bates.edu in the Office of Alumni and Parent Programs. For more information about the National Day of Service, visit: www.bates.edu/national-day-of-service-2006.xml 3. Audio slideshow: Bates production sharpened edge on Elton playDana Professor of Theater Martin Andrucki directed the Bates theater department's spring production of "Popcorn," Ben Elton's scathing comedy about the relationship between media and social behavior. Come back for Homecoming Weekend Oct. 27-29Come back to Bates for a crisp fall weekend. Homecoming Weekend highlights include a leadership conference for all Bates volunteers, Reunion planning sessions for classes ending in "2" and "7," a BOLD (Bobcats of the Last Decade) barbecue for the classes of 1997-2006, a Volunteer Recognition Dinner, and the opening reception for the Museum of Art's Charlie Hewitt exhibition. Slideshow: Bates OrientationOrientation for the Class of 2010, held Aug. 28-Sept. 8, included a little something for everyone. From lugging belongings into residential halls to hiking the most pristine section of the Appalachian Trail, from dining with former mill workers involved in creating a museum of their experience to considering Bates poet Rob Farnsworth's Convocation talk, first-year students eased themselves into college life. www.bates.edu/x149776.xml 6. The skills of listening and questioningAt Convocation, President Elaine Tuttle Hansen offered the Class of 2010 advice on being a good listener and asking good questions. www.bates.edu/x149996.xml 7. Alumni return for annual Finance & Consulting Boot CampThe Office of Career Services, along with 21 alumni and two corporate recruiters representing all areas of the finance and consulting industries, hosted its second annual Finance & Consulting Boot Camp Sept. 10. More than 100 students attended the daylong event on their first Sunday back at Bates. The event was open to all students, first years though seniors. This event couldn't happen without the commitment and assistance of Bates alumni. If any alumni wish to post jobs or internships, or would like to meet with students, please contact Eileen Wisnewski at 207-786-6235 or ewisnews@bates.edu abacus.bates.edu/career/BootCamp2006.html 8. Congress approves tax break on gifts from IRAsIt took nearly a decade, but Congress has finally enacted legislation as part of the Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006), which offers charitably minded individuals a golden opportunity to make gifts from their IRAs and exclude the amount of their gifts from gross income. http://www.bates.edu/x150101.xml 9. Bates People in the NewsAs more and more schools make news by dropping the SAT requirement for admissions, the media continue featuring Bates as a pioneer on the issue — including a New York Times story that quoted two Bates alums and cited the academic success of a third. Meanwhile, Emma Twombly '08 was featured in a different high-profile publication: Through an internship program at CosmoGirl, she interviewed Martha Stewart for that youth-oriented monthly. Finally, if there were any doubts, Bates' hip-and-cool credibility was affirmed once again by an appearance in Wired magazine, which gave a brief review to the college museum exhibit Cryptozoology (which ends Oct. 8). www.bates.edu/bates-in-the-news.xml |
