Mary Rice-DeFosse is Professor of French whose publications focus on nineteenth-century narrative, women’s writing, and critical theory. With Cathy Yandell, she recently edited Écriture Courante: Critical Perspectives on French and Francophone Women. Professor Rice-DeFosse’s courses on the French-speaking world include North America and the Caribbean. She has a particular interest in the history, culture and language of the Franco-Americans of New England and has often directed student research in this field. In the summer of 2006, with the support of a Harward Center Grant for Publicly Engaged Research she worked with two student interns and the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston to collect videographic oral histories of Francophone elders from the local community. She serves on the board of the Franco-American Collection of the University of Southern Maine, Lewiston-Auburn. She is past President of Women in French, an international professional organization, allied to the Modern Language Association, that supports research on women writers of French expression, and serves on its Executive Committee.
