Laurie O’Higgins, Euterpe B. Dukakis Professor of Classical and Medieval Studies, trained at Trinity College Dublin and
Cornell University (taking a year also to study at U.C. Berkeley). She has taught at The Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve and Bates. Her teaching interests are broad: Greek and Latin language and literature, Food in Ancient Greece and Rome, Gender and the Body in Ancient Greece and Rome. Her research is also broad in scope, but has focused particularly on the question of “hearing” the voices of non-elite men and women. In addition to numerous articles she published a book with Cambridge University press in 2003 entitled Women and Humor in Classical Greece. She is currently engaged on another book length project, this time on how (and why!) large numbers of eighteenth and nineteenth century Irish peasants studied Greek and Latin.
