1. Take plenty of clean, neat resumes with you. 2. Arrive on time - be approximately 10 to 15 minutes early (not a half-hour). 3. If the interview takes place over lunch or dinner, avoid alcoholic beverages and smoking. 4. Relax! Be honest and sincere. 5. Maintain good eye contact. 6. Ask for clarification to questions if you are not sure what is being asked. It is better to ask than to answer the wrong question. 7. Market yourself! Don't hesitate to tell the interviewer "I want this job", Show a confident yet appropriate goal directed attitude. You are your best advocate for getting the job. 8. Avoid controversial topics. Stay off your soapbox, and don't belabor a point in which you may have an interest if it doesn't fit into the flow of the interview. 9. Don't speak negatively about your peers, former employers, faculty, etc. Keep an upbeat, postive approach. 10. Have closure at the end of the interview. Summarize what you and interviewer have decided: when the interviewer might contact you next, when another interview might take place, etc. 11. Send a thank you letter! This demonstrates good etiquete, and it also keeps your name in the interviewer's mind. |
