The Goddard Award
The Alan C. Goddard '53 Award for Achievement in Football has been presented annually since 1954 through the generosity of Alan C. Goddard '53, who died Nov. 24, 2006. Just as Goddard proved his value through hard work, tremendous attitude and relentless team spirit, the award in his name is not a "most valuable player" award. Award winners return to Bates on Oct. 28. 2006, to honor Goddard "We decided the award should focus on where a young man was, what was anticipated of him and what he finally achieved, both personally and in football," said Robert Hatch, Bates football coach from 1952 to 1972 and later director of athletics. Goddard attended hundreds of Bates sporting events during his alumni life, the last being the Bates-Colby football game just four weeks before his death from ALS. "Alan's passion towards Bates and Bates football was infectious," said head coach Mark Harriman. "Alan supports the team, but especially the individual players. His message to the players at our annual awards dinner was to always approach life 'with fire in your belly.' It was a message he practiced all his life." Web Harrison '63, head coach from 1978 to 1991, said the Goddard award "is not about improving. It's about stretching yourself as much as possible."
