2009 Harriet M. and Fred E. Pomeroy Fund Scholarship For All Alumni Currently Enrolled in Health-Related Professional or Graduate Programs

The Biology Department, in conjunction with the Medical Studies Committee, is soliciting applications for scholarships to be awarded from the Harriet M. and Fred E. Pomeroy Fund. Each Pomeroy scholar will receive a grant of $5,000 to help support graduate/ professional training in Biology or Health Sciences.

Funding to offset student-paid tuition and fees will be sent directly to the institution in which the scholar is enrolled. Scholars are nominated from the applications received by the Medical Studies Committee and are selected by a vote of the faculty of Biology. There will be five scholarships awarded in 2009.

To be eligible for a Pomeroy scholarship, alumni must have completed significant coursework in Biology while at Bates (at least 5 courses) and successfully completed at least one semester of graduate or professional study before applying. Those who receive a stipend and tuition support are NOT eligible to apply. Only those who are paying their own tuition and fees are eligible for this award.

To apply, alumni must submit the following:

  • Official Bates transcript.
  • Graduate school transcript.
  • Resume and short statement of current educational and future career goals.
  • One letter of recommendation from a faculty member familiar with the applicant's graduate/professional study should be sent.

NOTE:  This letter, according to the Pomeroy guidelines, should address the applicant's character, academic ability in the chosen field, and potential for success in this field based on work done as part of graduate/professional study.

  • First year students must also submit a faculty assessment of the student’s second semester grades in addition to the faculty letter of recommendation.

The successful applicant will have demonstrated significant academic achievement in addition to extracurricular professional development.

All application materials and current contact information, including phone number and e-mail address, must be received by Marh 27, 2009.  Please send to Sue Cook, Bates College, 31 Frye St., Lewiston ME 04240. Contact Sue Cook at (207) 786-6233 with any questions.
