First-year applicants to Bates must apply for financial aid at the same time they apply for admission.  To be considered for financial aid, candidates must complete and/or provide the following materials:

  • The CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE (school code 3076) should be completed online by November 15 for Early Decision I applicants, January 1 for Early Decision II applicants, and  February 1 for Regular Decision applicants.
  • The FAFSA (Title IV school code 002036)  must be filed with the federal processor by February 1 for all applicants (please note that the FAFSA can be completed no earlier than January 1, 2010).
  • Copies of 2009 parent and student W-2 forms (including non-custodial W-2 forms, if parents are divorced or separated) must be provided even if a tax return is not filed, and should be mailed directly to the Student Financial Services Office by February 10.  Please be sure to print the student applicant's name on the top each page you provide.
  • Copies of signed 2009 parent and student tax returns (including non-custodial tax returns, if parents are divorced or separated) with all schedules must be sent to the Student Financial Services Office no later than April 15.  Please be sure to print the student applicant's name on the top each page you provide.
  • If your parents own a share in a corporation or partnership, copies of those tax returns for 2009 (or the most recent year available) are also required.

Please note: Early Decision candidates must also submit copies of 2008 student and parent federal income tax returns and 2008 W-2 forms to the Student Financial Services Office to be considered for institutional assistance.

  • If you will not be filing a tax return, you must complete a Bates Non-filer Statement and provide it to our office.
  • Verification Worksheet, if selected by the Department of Education.
  • The CSS Noncustodial PROFILE must be completed by the non-custodial parent by November 15 for Early Decision I applicants, January 1 for Early Decision II applicants, and February 1 for Regular Decision applicants.  This process is similar to the online PROFILE process for the student and custodial parent.  Information about the Noncustodial PROFILE is automatically sent to the student and/or the noncustodial parent by the College Board after the student registers for PROFILE.
In cases in which parents are divorced or separated, a contribution from the non-custodial parent is included as part of the expected family contribution.  A non-custodial parent's ability to contribute is measured in the same manner as the custodial parent's, according to income and asset strength.  Willingness to contribute is not a factor in our evaluation, nor are payment agreements that may exist between the custodial and noncustodial parent.

Required materials (with the exception of the PROFILE, FAFSA and Noncustodial PROFILE applications) should be mailed to the Student Financial Services Office at 44 Mountain Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240.

Accepted students who were originally awarded financial aid and who have deferred their admission until Fall 2010 should re-submit a complete financial aid application, including the FAFSA, CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE(s), and parent and student federal tax returns and W-2 forms by April 15, 2010.  Students who complete their applications by this date will be notified of their financial aid eligibility in May.
