Outside ScholarshipsIf a student receives a scholarship award from a source outside of Bates (e.g. high school, civic organization, charitable foundation, business, etc.), the source and amount of the award must be reported in order to ensure that financial aid awards remain in compliance with federal regulations. Because outside grants can affect eligibility for federal student loans and other types of financial aid, students who receive these types of awards should report any outside scholarships received by June 30. Students can report their outside scholarship by clicking on Financial Aid Online Forms under the Student Financial Services tab on the Garnet Gateway and selecting the Outside Scholarships option. It is important to note that the individual elements of a financial aid package may be adjusted due to the receipt of outside grants. A student’s financial aid from scholarships or loans may not exceed the cost of attendance. Scholarship checks from private organizations should be mailed to Student Financial Services, 44 Mountain Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240. Checks received by students directly from the donor should be endorsed, marked “For Deposit Only to Bates College”, and mailed to the above address. Please do not mail scholarship checks with any other payments. Scholarships are divided evenly (unless noted otherwise by the donor), and one-half is applied to each semester (fall and winter). If a donor requires a bill from Bates College, please send written instructions, including the name and address of the donor, to Student Financial Services, 44 Mountain Avenue, Lewiston, ME 04240. Earnings from Federal Work-StudyFederal Work-Study funds are earned by the student, and are not applied against account balances. Students receive a paycheck from the College according to the number of hours worked. Federal Work-Study funds are intended to be used to help offset students' personal expenses during the year. |
