HPV (Gardasil) Vaccine Information

The Bates Health Center is stocking vaccine and students who would like to begin the three shot series or are due for their next dose of Gardasil may receive the vaccine without an appointment. Vaccines will not be given during Doctor’s Hours which are Mondays and Fridays 1-4, and Wednesdays, 8- 11.

The cost of the vaccine at the Health Center is $150.00 per dose.  Students receiving the vaccine will have their Bates Student Accounts charged directly and will be provided with a detailed written copy of the charge which can be used for reimbursement from private insurance.  The Bates College student insurance policy does not cover the cost of vaccines.

Some facts about the new Gardasil vaccine are listed below:

  • Gardasil Vaccine is given in three doses 0, 2, and 6 months.
  • Gardasil helps prevent the following conditions caused by HPV (Human Papilloma Virus) Types 6, 11, 16, 18.
    • Genital Warts
    • Precancerous cervical, vaginal, or vulvar lesions
    • Cervical Cancer
  • Gardasil is not a substitute for regular Pap tests and exams by your health care provider.  Gardasil helps prevent the above conditions but will not treat them.
  • Gardasil does not protect against HPV types not included in the vaccine.  HPV types 6, 11, 16, and 18 cause approximately 70% of cervical cancer and 90% of genital warts.
  • Gardasil will not protect against HPV types which you may have been exposed to previously.  You may benefit from Gardasil if you already have HPV.  This is because most people are not infected with all four types of HPV in the vaccine.
  • The most common side effects of Gardasil are:  pain, swelling, itching, and redness at the injection site, and fever.
