Bates women win at No. 9 Union, 15-12

Senior Stephanie Cronan (Marblehead, Mass.) led Union with six goals, while senior Allie Toney (Bayville, N.Y.) had two goals and junior Keri Messa (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) had two assists with a goal for the Dutchwomen. Maciewicz scored three goals off the Bobcats’ bench, and first-year Katelyn Drake (Hudson, Ohio) and junior Molly Wagner (Longmeadow, Mass.) added two goals each to highlight Bates. Caroline Thomas (Barrington, R.I.) and Rachel Hameling (North Reading, Mass.) had a goal and two assists for the guests. Bates outshot Union, 33-26, and won 20 of the 29 draw controls in the triumph. Wagner won six draw controls in the contest. Union freshman goalkeeper Melissa McDonald (Lynnfield, Mass.) made 12 saves in her debut for the Dutchwomen, while junior Katie Nickerson (Windham, N.H.) stopped six shots for the Bobcats. Union took a 7-6 lead into the half, and after goals by Toney and Cronan took a 9-6 lead with 28:22 remaining in the second stanza. Cronan gave the Dutchwomen a 12-11 lead with 7:34 left on an unassisted tally, but Drake tied it 33 seconds later on a free position shot. Harmeling scored Bates’ fourth free-position goal of the game for the eventual winner with just 3:09 left, and Greenwood added insurance with two tallies in the final 1:28. The Bobcats (2-0) play at Babson tomorrow at 5 p.m. |
