The medicalization of societyNot so long ago, shyness was usually seen as a random character trait, sadness the natural reaction to misfortune and alcoholism a sign of personal weakness. In recent decades those conditions, and many others, have been "medicalized" — associated with biological causes and redefined as medical diagnoses, not merely products of personality or fate. Rebecca Herzig, associate professor of women and gender studies at Bates, played a key role in a novel exploration of this pervasive phenomenon, an exploration resulting in a recent series of essays in the medical journal, The Lancet. www.bates.edu/x158359.xml 6. Hooglund is Honor's Thesis advisor to Bates senior Jaleh Taheri of Stamford, Conn., who showed the group slides from her own recent fieldtrip to Iran. President Elaine Tuttle Hansen noted that the new Androscoggin Scholarship Fund "will enhance our ability to provide financial aid to qualified students from Androscoggin County, today and long into the future." The chair of the Garcelon Society, longtime Auburn resident and Bates parent Barbara Trafton, said the group is about halfway to the $1 million endowment it hopes to raise by 2008. She noted that an anonymous donor has offered to match the next $125,000 dollar for dollar, in effect doubling the value of any donation.
