Ability to think critically and analyze fact patterns...

What are your job responsibilities?

I act as the primary administrator for a victims' fund operated by the State of Conn. Judicial Branch for individuals who have been the victims of dishonest conduct by their attorney. I act as staff attorney to a committee of judges, lawyers and lay persons who oversee the fund and who review claims for reimbursement from the fund.

How did you discover and obtain your current job?

The primary resource was an advertisement in a Connecticut legal publication. Networking did not come into play. The primary skills and experience that I brought to the interview was my previous experience as an attorney in the private practice of law, and my familiarity with
court and trial procedure.

What advice would you give students interested in working in your field?

For most new attorneys, it is imperative that they obtain real, hands on experience in the practice of law. Sometimes that means starting as an associate in a smaller firm, or even volunteering time with a legal services organization, in order to gain experience.

How can students gain insight into this career?

Most attorneys enjoy talking about the profession. I would recommend spending time speaking with people who are involved in different aspects of the legal profession in order to determine what would fit their interests. There are a number of different careers in the legal field. Not everyone will enjoy the private practice of law. Some people are more suited to government legal fields, legal services for the poor, etc.

What are important characteristics of people who succeed in your career?

Ability to think critically and analyze fact patterns; the ability to write clearly; and the ability to work well with others.

How can students best prepared themselves while still in college?

Take courses that are writing intensive. Take courses that require analytical reasoning and thought. Take courses where it is expected that you will have to participate in a dialogue and think on your feet. Volunteer, if you can, in areas related to the legal field.

What are your future plans?

I will probably stay, as I enjoy my job.
