Bates Energy Action Movement (BEAM)
Beam is a student-run campaign dedicated to taking action against anthropegenic global climate change through direct political participation and the promotion of carbon neutrality at Bates. You can contact BEAM via email at beam@lists.bates.edu
Environmental Coalition (EC)
The Environmental Coalition focuses on improving environmental responsibility at Bates, in Lewiston-Auburn, and on a national scale. We work towards these goals with many different approaches, including campaigning for changes to specific college policies, educating students, and drawing attention to crucial issues outside Bates.
Bates Outing Club
As part of the Bates community, you are automatically a member of the BOC, which sponsors trips in the New England wilderness throughout the year that may involve day hiking, backpacking, canoeing, swimming, skiing, and snowshoeing. Everyone is welcome; you need little or no experience to join these outings, which are an ideal break from your studies, and the BOC provides all kinds of gear needed for various outdoor excursions.
Bates College EcoReps
Bates College EcoReps work directly with the Environmental Coordinator to bring sustainability into student life. Working on a peer to peer level, the EcoReps are able to add a direct social dimension to sustainability outreach.
Sustainability Theme Housing
Webb and Chase houses have been officially designated as environmental sustainability theme houses for the 07/08 school year. Accomodating 40 students, the two theme houses create a home for environmental leadership at Bates, enable students to live more sustainably and "do more with less." The houses also serve as pilots for sustainable products, systems, habits, lifestyles, design, and innovation.
