Bates agrees with the principle of green building and is committed to sustainable growth. Here are some of the steps we are taking to integrate sustainability into our campus planning and buildings:

Master Planning

Over the next decade Bates will significantly revamp its campus from student housing to atheletic facilities, and integrating the sciences. In order to make the process integrated and open the College created a Master Planning Steering Committee comprised of key faculty and staff. The Committee on Environmental Responsibility is working with the Steering Committee to incorporate sustainability into decision-making. We are taking this opportunity to redesign Bates' environmental footprint and grow sustainably into the future.

Construction and Renovations

Sustainable design is acknowledged as an important aspect of all building on campus. Bates has adopted the LEED Silver level as a minimum standard for all new construction and renovations.

Bates recently completed two new LEED Silver equivalent buildings on campus:

Green Cleaning

  • Custodial Services reduced the number of chemical solutions and switched to greener cleaning solutions.
  • All paper products (such as paper towels and toliet tissue) have been replaced with Green Seal products which use 100% recovered content.
