Organizing incoming email into folders (and/or subfolders) is an easy way to manage many messages. Folders created in Webmail or in the imap section of Thunderbird (not under Local Folders) will display in both programs. Setting up filters to sort incoming messages directly into folders for reading/reviewing is also a best practice. Contact Help Desk Services, x8222 with any questions or concerns.
A. Creating Folders in Thunderbird:
1. Click to highlight the imap account (typically named Bates)
2. Under File, click on New Folder
3. Type in a name for the folder
Choose whether the new folder lives under the imap section (in line with Inbox, Drafts, etc.) or to make the new folder a Subfolder of an already existing folder by using the pulldown menu to choose which folder.
4. Click OK to add the folder.

B. If these folders do not show in your list of folders:
1. Under File, click Subscribe
2. Be sure the new folders have a checkmark to see them.
Thunderbird gives the option of making new subfolders under both the imap and local sections.
Remember: Local folders reside only on the machine they are viewed on, not viewable via Webmail or backed up on network servers.
C. Creating Folders in Bates Webmail:
1. Login to Bates Webmail
2. Click on Folders
D. Using the pulldown to Choose Action:
1. Select Create Folder
2. Type in a name of the folder
3. Click OK

A message will appear that the folder was successfully added.
The folder will show in the list of folders, not only in Webmail, but also in Thunderbird.
