Thunderbird E-mail: Adding LDAP Bates Directory

LDAP, Lightweight Directory Access Protocol, is an Internet protocol that email and other programs use to look up information from a server. The following steps describe how to configure LDAP as an option for the Bates directory in the address book of Thunderbird to work with the our server.

Open Thunderbird from a PC or Mac.

  • From the Thunderbird menu, click Tools and then click Account Settings
  • In the Account Settings dialog box, select Composition & Addressing from the left side of the screen.
  • Under Addressing select Use a different LDAP server:
  • Click Edit Directories

In the LDAP Directory Servers dialog box, click Add

  • In the Directory Server Properties dialog box, on the General tab, enter the following information:
    • Name = Bates LDAP
    • Hostname = ldap.bates.edu
    • Base DN = dc=bates,dc=edu

NOTE:The Port Number should be left as the default.

  • Click OK to close the Directory Server Properties dialog box.
  • Click OK to close the LDAP Directory Servers dialog box.
  • In the Account Settings dialog box, open the pull down list under Addressing
  • Select the Bates LDAP server you just defined.
  • Click OK to exit the Account Settings dialog box.


To test the LDAP configuration:
  • Click Address Book
  • In the Address Book dialog box, select Bates LDAP
  • You should be able to type in a last name within the search box and see the results of the lookup
